SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The editors of Byte and Switch have named PowerFile Inc., an innovator in archive appliances for permanent storage of digital content and assets, one of the "Top 10 Startups to Watch" in an article published September 14.
Companies selected to Byte and Switch's Top 10 list were those that received their Series A funding within the past two years and that have "a really interesting gamble or a creative take on the myriad of technologies that inhabit the storage market," according to the article.
PowerFile's "creative take" is a new and innovative approach to long-term, unalterable data that enables both online access and long-term storage. PowerFile's Active Archive Appliance(TM) (A3(TM)) uses DVD-based optical media as a replacement for tape as a medium in a new approach that keeps fixed-content data, such as documents, images and media files, accessible on the network and "active."
"To be named among the Top 10 in any industry overview is especially satisfying but knowing that Byte and Switch sought out truly noteworthy companies to highlight makes this designation an even greater honor," said Kirk Dunn, CEO of PowerFile. "Our approach to permanent storage of data enables companies to better leverage their IT infrastructure investments and rein in spiraling storage management costs. The A3 is perfectly suited for companies that need to protect important archived information from accidental erasure, unauthorized modification, data corruption or viruses for years to come."
PowerFile's archive appliances fit well within any enterprise that has adopted an ILM approach in creating storage tiers by enabling a true archive tier with different access and permanence requirements. They complement existing storage infrastructure by offloading disk-based primary or near-line systems that are currently used to store fixed content. PowerFile's new Active Archive Appliance (A3) is built from the ground up to offer the longevity, rapid retrieval and cost efficiency needed for active archiving of valuable fixed content. PowerFile's Permanent Storage Appliance (PSA) is an easy-to-install, non-disruptive, scalable, turnkey appliance.

It focuses on addressing the information needs of enterprise and service provider customers by covering storage networking from three unique angles: technology, finance, and people. The magazine covers how storage network technologies work for corporate IT buyers, but also reveals key storage networking investment opportunities, explains how service providers can make money from the technology, and gives credit to the movers and shakers who are making storage networking one of the most dynamic segments of the networking industry.
